It is expensive to age in Colorado. Next50 recently released a report that highlights the growing financial strain older adults in Colorado face as they age. With costs for housing, caregiving, transportation, and digital access rising faster than incomes, especially in rural areas and communities of color, many older Coloradans are struggling to meet basic needs.
Colorado is one of the fastest-aging populations in the nation. Colorado now has more people over 60 than under 18. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of residents aged 65 and older increased by about 58%, significantly outpacing the state’s overall population growth of 15%. This rapid growth places an escalating financial strain on both aging individuals themselves and the state’s overall resources.
The report calls for urgent, coordinated policy action to make aging more affordable and equitable across the state.
