This August was particularly celebratory for me. August marked my 50th birthday and the State of Colorado’s 150^th anniversary. Reflecting on my own 50 years, I also learned about some of the people who have shaped our state. Next50 supported History Colorado’s effort to collect 150 oral histories throughout the state. People like 91-year-old Harry Tuft, a lifelong music enthusiast and co-founder of Swallow Hill Music, or Katharine Archuleta of the San Luis Valley, who became a prominent educator and political leader. Or Michelene Big Man, the founder of the Native American Women Warriors, which supports Native American women Veterans since 2010.  These leaders have contributed to making Colorado a great place to get older.  There’s something fitting about hitting my birthday milestone alongside our State’s birthday while leading an organization dedicated to reimagining what it means to grow older in this country. Entering my next 50 while leading Next50 has sharpened my sense of urgency about the work still ahead of us.
