Investing in a World That Values Aging

Aging is one of the defining opportunities and challenges of our time. The global population aged 60 and older is growing rapidly, and by 2030, people over 65 are projected to outnumber those under 18 in the United States. These demographic changes will shape housing, transportation, healthcare, workforce participation, technology, and community life for decades.

At Next50, we believe this moment requires more than public policy and philanthropy alone. It requires investment strategies that recognize both the social impact and economic opportunity created by a rapidly aging world.

Capital markets influence many of the systems that shape how people age. Investment decisions affect housing developments, healthcare innovations, transportation systems, digital tools, financial products, and community infrastructure. To create a world that values aging, we must also shape how capital is deployed.

Since 2016, Next50 has invested millions of dollars in organizations improving the lives of older adults. In 2024, we committed to aligning our entire $300M endowment with our mission.

To guide this work, Next50 developed the Aging Investment Framework (AIF), a practical approach for identifying and evaluating investment opportunities that contribute to positive outcomes for older adults.

The Aging Investment Framework is organized around four investment goals:

  • Expanding Economic Opportunity
  • Shaping the Built Environment
  • Advancing Health
  • Championing Social Inclusion

This framework applies across public and private markets, asset classes, geographies, and investment strategies. It helps investors understand how their dollars contribute to a world that values aging and classifies opportunities by their impact on older adults.

We recognize that we cannot create the future we hope to see by ourselves. As we align our endowment with our mission, we invite others to join us in building an aging investment movement that recognizes aging as both a social imperative and a market opportunity. We invite engagement from:

  • Nonprofits
  • For-profit companies
  • Fund managers
  • CDFIs and financial institutions
  • Housing developers
  • Government agencies
  • Researches
  • Other organizations whose work influences how people age

Next50 partnered with the Sorenson Impact Institute to develop an Aging Investing Roadmap based on our established Aging Investment Framework. The roadmap is designed to help investors integrate aging considerations into investment decision-making and align capital with long-term demographic realities.

Grants support charitable activities and field-building efforts without repayment expectations or requirements.

PRIs provide impact-first investments for mission-aligned projects and may accept below-market or otherwise flexible financial terms.

MRIs provide investment capital that seeks both positive social impact and a risk-adjusted, market-rate financial return.

The right approach for each request depends on several factors, including the opportunity, its stage of development, and the intended impact.

Organizations interested in engaging with Next50 don’t need to decide in advance whether their opportunity is best suited to a grant, PRI, or MRI. We welcome conversations with organizations advancing solutions related to aging and can help identify the best engagement pathway.

Together, we can advance an aging investment movement that helps direct multiple forms of capital toward solutions that strengthen economic opportunity, social inclusion, healthy aging, and thriving communities.
